Do You Need a Water Heater Replacement?

If you do not have hot water, that is definitely a sign, but there can be other reasons your hot water tank is on the fritz. Here are some signs you may need to replace your water heater:

  • Rusty Colored Water – if your water seems to have rust in or is orange/brown-tinted, that is a sign the tank’s interior is rusted. Not only do you not want to drink or bathe in that, but it means leaking could happen at any time. It could be a plumbing problem, as well. You can test it by running pure cold water into a container and then only hot water. If just the hot is rusty looking, it is your tank.
  • Leaking Tank – Minor fractures can develop in a tank over the years as the metal expands from the heat. The older your water heater is, the greater the chance this can happen. It is not always noticeable as the tank may not leak when it is cold. Check for moisture on the floor. When this happens, the heater needs replaced.
  • Served Its Purpose – If your water heater has reached the end of its lifespan, then a replacement is needed. You can look at the manufacturer’s sticker on many tanks to determine the year it was made. It is typically the first two digits of the serial number. Water heaters over ten years old should be replaced soon.
